The 2026 Midterm Elections - Affordability Beat Everything

Democrats flipped both chambers of Congress on Tuesday, and only twice in the last 50 years has control of both chambers changed in the same cycle. The Senate gains reached into red states including Iowa, Ohio, Texas, Kansas and South Carolina. A map that wide needs an explanation that crosses state lines, and the best candidate is the price of living. The numbers were there before Election Day. In the final AP-NORC poll, 85% of voters called the economy one of the most important issues. Seventy-four percent disapproved of Trump’s handling of the economy and 79% of his handling of the cost of living. Pew found the economy ranked first among Republican-leaning voters too, at 82%.

The warning came a year earlier. In Virginia’s 2025 race, ABC exit polls showed roughly half of voters named the economy as the top issue, and they backed Spanberger by more than 24 points. Then costs rose again. Gas prices jumped more than 50 cents a gallon after the Iran war began. The May inflation report was the highest in three years, driven by gasoline. A Fox poll found 61% of voters called gas prices a major household problem, up from 48% two years earlier, and 52% said the same of health care costs. Those health costs had their own cause: KFF estimated that subsidized ACA enrollees’ premiums rose 114% on average in 2026.

Republicans never found an answer voters accepted. Vance blamed Iranian attacks on the Strait of Hormuz for higher prices and argued voters should still favor Republicans on the economy. Trump called higher gas prices an “inexpensive price to pay” for the war. A Fox poll found 63% of voters said the administration had made the economy worse, including a quarter of Republicans. After the loss, the party split over blame. Vance blamed the war in Iran, while Trump accepted the result and pointed a finger at Republican candidates. Those explanations are less opposed than they sound. The war reached voters through the pump, and for many of them the pump was where a foreign conflict became a household bill. Gas prices are, in a Republican strategist’s words, among the few indicators voters experience in real time. The tone deafness of the current administration was apparent as well. Americans do not care about the reflecting pool or the ball room, most of us (myself included) are just trying to stay above water.
